about us

REST studio has been founded by two graduates of Lodz Academy of Fine Arts, Dominika Gacka and Julia Piekarska. Dominika also has a degree in Piano from Katowice Academy of Music. Weaving is at the centre of their artistic endeavours. They produce richly structured textiles by hand, focussing in particular on haptic properties as well as using environmentally-friendly materials.

Their search for beauty lies not only in the visual, but also in the tactile. Through a variety of weaving techniques, they come up with sophisticated structures for use in interiors, furniture and accessories. They weave all their projects by hand on analogue harness looms, using traditional techniques. Their search for reusing yarn waste has led to the creation of new materials, as part of Restki.

Lucky breaks, chance discoveries and eureka moments - this would be a suitable description of the journey REST goes through in the process of creating projects The search, with utmost attention paid to the interaction of colour, weave, and yarn type is the most satisfying stage of project conception.

Our first experiments with traditional weaving took place at the Lodz Academy of Fine Arts. Green Yarns Lab, our first joint project, involved creating textiles with highly tactile properties, using natural yarn coloured with plant-based dyes. It was shown publically during the Lodz Design Festival, as part of the make me! competition final.

In 2022 we joined the NÓW Nowe Rzemiosło association - an organisation that brings together todays’ artisans.
